William Varnham Millton | William Varnham MilltonMILLTON, WILLIAM VARNHAM (1858-87) was a son of Captain William Newton Millton (1814-89), who came to New Zealand first in 1842 and settled in Canterbury about 1860. He was educated at Christ's College, where he was a provincial scholar (1874), a Somes scholar (1875) and a university scholar (1874-75). Millton was admitted to the bar and practised law in Christchurch. He was a fine cricketer and Rugby footballer. He represented Canterbury at cricket from 1878 to 1886, playing against Auckland, Otago, Tasmania (1884), Shaw's eleven (1882) and the Australian eleven (1886). In football he represented Canterbury from 1876 to 1884. He played against New South Wales in 1882, and was captain of the New Zealand team which visited that Colony in 1884.
