William Salmond | William SalmondSALMOND, WILLIAM (1835-1917) was born in Edinburgh, and educated at Heriot's Hospital, the High School and the University in his native city. Graduating B.A. in 1853, he spent four years studying theology in Scotland and Germany and, ordained by the Presbyterian Church, served as minister at North Shields, Northumberland, from 1858-75. In 1876 he arrived at Port Chalmers by the Corona. After 10 years as professor of theology in the Presbyterian Church of Otago and Southland he was appointed in 1886 professor of mental and moral science at Otago University. He was created D.D. of Glasgow University in 1882 and of Edinburgh University in 1885. From 1888 to 1912 he was on the New Zealand University senate. Resigning his chair in 1915, Salmond was made professor emeritus. He died two years later (on 6 Mar 1917). Salmond published a number of sermons and lectures, and was a frequent contributor to periodicals. He married a daughter of the Rev James Young, of Dunfermline, and was the father of Sir J. W.
