William Joseph Mahoney | William Joseph MahoneyMAHONEY, WILLIAM JOSEPH (1848-1903) was born at Pallas Grean, County Limerick, and educated there and at Mount Mellary seminary, Waterford, and St Mary's College, Dundalk, and at Dublin (where F. Redwood, q.v., was a professor). Ordained priest, he came to New Zealand in 1874, and in the following year was appointed assistant at Nelson to Garin (q.v.), on whose death in 1889 he became head of the church in Nelson. Mahoney did valuable work in the erection of new buildings and the development of the orphanage at Stoke. He was made a dean in 1899, and in the following year celebrated his jubilee as a priest.
