William Henderson Calder

CALDER, WILLIAM HENDERSON was a member of the firm of Calder and Blacklock, which was established in Invercargill in the earliest years of the settlement. He took a prominent part in the affairs of his province. In 1861 he was elected to the Southland Provincial Council for Invercargill, which he represented for some years (1861-65, 1867-70). He was a member of the executive in 1864 and again in 1869, and was a strong supporter of the reunion of the province with Otago. When this was achieved he represented Invercargill in the Otago Provincial Council (1870). He was returned in the following year to represent the town in Parliament and sat till 1873 (when he retired). Calder could have been Superintendent if he had desired, but preferred to support William Wood.

Southland P.C. Proc.; Kinross, 26-28.
