William Guyton

GUYTON, WILLIAM, was born at Liverpool. He came to New Zealand in the Coromandel (Aug 1840) and entered into business with Ridgway and Earp in Wellington. In 1843 he was on the burgesses' roll of Wellington and, being elected at the head of the aldermen in that year, he became mayor on the death of Hunter. The ordinance under which the corporation was created having been disallowed by the Home Government, Guyton called a meeting of the aldermen on 4 Dec 1843 to wind up the affairs of the corporation. He was a trustee of the Pickwick Club (1840). Guyton was afterwards in business in Wanganui, where one of the main streets is named after him. He returned to England early.
