Thomas MacGibbon

MACGIBBON, THOMAS (1839-1925) was born in Glasgow and arrived in New Zealand in 1849 with his parents by the Mooltan. After living in Caversham, Otago, he engaged in farming and in 1872, with his father and brother, he started in business as general merchants in Gore and Mataura. He became a member of the Southland education board and later chairman, and its representative on the Otago school commissioners, and had a seat on the Mataura borough council.

In 1905 Macgibbon as a Reform candidate defeated R. McNab for the Mataura seat. He retired in 1908 and was a member of the Legislative Council (1914-21). He was a member of the Otago University council (1913-20), and of the board of governors of McGlashan and Columba Colleges, and for many years an elder of the church. He died on 27 Sep 1925. (Macgibbon's father spelled his name M'Gibbon.)
