Thomas Hitchings

HITCHINGS, THOMAS (1816-94) was born at Oxford, England, qualified M.R.C.S. London, and came to New Zealand in the early fifties. He settled in Hawke's Bay, was government health officer, and attended to the wounded in the tribal fighting at the Big Bush between Hapuku and Te Moananui. He was M.P.C. for Napier Town (1859-67). In 1864 he was appointed provincial surgeon. Hitchings died on 26 Feb 1894. He married (1861) Mary Elizabeth Challen, daughter of George Garland (Sussex).
