Samuel Hayward Ford | Samuel Hayward FordFORD, SAMUEL HAYWARD, a medical practitioner, reached New Zealand with his wife in Aug 1837, intending to establish a hospital for both races at one of the mission stations. He settled at Paihia as surgeon to the missionary community, but his health failing he retired to Wahapu (1841). After the sack of Kororareka, at Heke's request Mrs. Ford arranged for the body of Pumuka to be taken to Paihia for burial. On the urgent advice of Williams, Ford went to live in Auckland, but returned to the Bay in 1849. Shortly after Ford's arrival in New Zealand he attended 800 native sufferers from influenza.
