Robert Ferguson Cuthbertson

CUTHBERTSON, ROBERT FERGUSON (1840-1913) was born on the Clyde and educated at the Glasgow Academy and Edinburgh University. Trained as an accountant in Liverpool, he was engaged in business there till 1860, when he came to New Zealand and joined his brother sheepfarming in Southland.

After being almost ruined by the ravages of rabbits, he practised his profession in Invercargill, where he was a foundation member of the New Zealand Institute of Accountants. Cuthbertson was a member of the Southland Provincial Council for Waiau (1864-65 and 1868), and was in the executive in 1865. He was afterwards a member of the first Wallace county council, secretary of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, a visiting justice and agent for the public trustee. He married a daughter of Thomas Denniston (q.v.). He died on 1 Jun 1913.
