MOETARA RANGATIRA was also a prominent war chief. He was present when his people were defeated by Te Rauparaha at Waima (1810), took part in the Amiowhenua expedition, and was one of the Ngapuhi leaders at Te Ika-a-ranganui (1825). After taking the captured Ngati-Whatua chiefs with him to Hokianga he liberated them. Both brothers signed the Treaty of Waitangi on 13 Feb 1840. Moetara died about Sep 1864 and Rangatira on 1 Nov 1880. The latter was the last of the chiefs who signed the Treaty. He was a Roman Catholic.
