MURPHY, MICHAEL, was practising as a lawyer at Kororareka in the early part of 1840. He was gazetted a justice of the peace and requested by Governor Hobson (in July 1840) to proceed with C. B. Robinson (q.v.) in H.M.S. Britomart to Banks Peninsula to hold sittings of the court at various points in evidence of the existence of British sovereignty. He was appointed police magistrate at Port Nicholson in July 1841, and sub-sheriff for that district. These positions he held until the following year, when he left the colony.
