Maria Elise Allman Marchant | Maria Elise Allman MarchantMARCHANT, MARIA ELISE ALLMAN (1869-1919) was born in Wellington, a daughter of J. W. A. Marchant, Surveyor-general (1901-06). She was educated privately, and at Wellington Girls' High School, of which she was dux in 1887. After teaching for two years at Miss Swainson's private school, she attended Canterbury College. (B.A. 1892; M.A. 1894). She was later on the staff of Wellington Girls' High School (1890-95). In 1896 she was appointed headmistress of Otago Girls' High School, which position she held for 10 years. At the time of her death (on 15 Nov 1919) she was headmistress of St John's Girls' College, Invercargill. Cycl.
