Keith Ramsay

RAMSAY, KEITH (1843-1906) was born at Alyth, Perthshire, Scotland, and educated at Blairgowrie. Coming to New Zealand in 1862 by the Jura, he entered the firm of Cargill and Co. in Dunedin, and three years later established his own business as a shipowner. In public life Ramsay was a member of the Dunedin City Council (1871-73) and mayor in 1874; chairman of the Otago harbour board (eight years); president of the chamber of commerce, and vice-president of the Dunedin Savings Bank. He was a founder of the National Insurance Co. and the Westport Coal Co., and a director of both until his death (on 3 May 1906); and was chairman of the stock exchange proprietary and of the Perpetual Trustees, Estate and Agency Co. In 1871 Ramsay married Janet Torry, daughter of Archibald Douglas, of Edinburgh.
