John Veale | John VealeVEALE, JOHN (1814-1907) was born at Clawton, Devon, educated in that parish and brought up as a carpenter and builder. He married (1840) a daughter of Philip Cole, and in 1854 came to New Zealand with his family in the Hamilla Mitchell. His father (John Veale) had preceded him in the Amelia Thompson (1841). Veale served in the militia during the Maori troubles; represented New Plymouth in the Provincial Council (1866-69) and was an early member of the old town board. After many years as a builder he opened a store in New Plymouth and retired from business in 1878. Taranaki P.C. Minutes; Cycl.
