John Lovell | John LovellLOVELL, JOHN (1810-97) was born in England, and came to New Zealand in the Tasmania in 1853. He took up land at Sawyers Bay, near Dunedin, and later a sheep station near Kaitangata, from which Lovell's Flat took its name. His son John (who was drowned shortly afterwards) discovered coal there. Lovell returned to live in England and bought an estate in Sussex, but came to New Zealand again in 1864 and lived in Dunedin until his death (on 11 Mar 1897). Otago Daily Times, 13 Mar 1897.
