John George Freer | John George FreerFREER, JOHN GEORGE (1825-72) came to New Zealand about 1862 from Cape Colony, where he had seen service in the Cape Mounted Rifles. He became captain and quartermaster in the 2nd Waikato regiment. After the war he went into business as proprietor of the Army and Navy hotel in Auckland. Freer represented Auckland East in the Provincial Council (1863-69) and Pensioner Settlements (1870-72). He died on 8 Nov 1872. Parltry Record; Auckland P.C. Proc.; N.Z. Herald, 27 Nov 1872.
