John Blacklock | John BlacklockBLACKLOCK, JOHN (?-?) came to Otago in the fifties and at the end of 1856 went to Invercargill to arrange for starting a business there. In returning to Dunedin on foot (Feb 1857) he lost his way in the Tautuku forest and was without food for four days. He started a softgoods business with Calder at Invercargill. Blacklock took a prominent part in public affairs. He represented Invercargill in the Southland Provincial Council (1865-67); and Waihopai (1867-69); and after the reunion with Otago represented Waihopai in the Otago Council (1871-72). He was a member of the executive in Southland almost continuously from 1865 to 1869. He died in California in Jun 1905. Roberts, Southland; Beattie, i, ii.
