John Alexander Smith | John Alexander SmithSMITH, JOHN ALEXANDER (1813-89) came to New Zealand about 1850; spent a few years in Auckland and was an early settler in Hawkes Bay. He was in business as a merchant and took a leading part in local government. He represented Napier Town in the Provincial Council (1863-67) and Suburban South (1875); was a member of the first Napier harbour board (1875) and was afterwards on the hospital and charitable aid board.
