James Purvis Jameson | James Purvis JamesonJAMESON, JAMES PURVIS (1824-96) was born and brought up in London. He came to New Zealand in the Sebastopol (1863). He was in business as a merchant in Christchurch and had farms at Leeston and Coalgate. In 1868 he was elected to the City Council and in 1871 he was mayor. He took an active interest in fostering New Zealand industries, and was a promoter and sometime president of the industrial association. He helped to establish the Kaiapoi Woollen Co. and was a director of the Mutual Benefit Building Society. Jameson died on 6 Sep 1896. The Press, 7 Sep 1896.
