Hone Tewainohu | Hone TewainohuTEWAINOHU, HONE, belonged to a line of fighting chiefs of Ngati-Kahungunu (Ngati-Pahauwera hapu). After the massacre of the peace emissaries by Te Waru at Whataroa, Wainohu declared unequivocally for war against Te Kooti (Oct 1868). One of his sons, Henare Wepiha (1883-1921), was an ordained clergyman of the Church of England. He served throughout the war of 1914-18 as chaplain to the Maori battalion and received the Serbian Order of the White Eagle. He died Oct 1 1921. Lambert (p); Studholme.
