George Randall Johnson | George Randall JohnsonJOHNSON, GEORGE RANDALL (1833-1919) was a son of the Rev. Richard Johnson, M.A., and was born at Lavenham, Suffolk. He was educated at Eton and Clare College, Cambridge (B.A. 1857; M.A. 1860). He was a fine cricketer, and on one occasion played for the Gentlemen of England. He was called to the bar of Lincoln's Inn (1861). In the late sixties, with his brother, J. W. Johnson (q.v.), he took up the Maraetaha station at Young Nick's Head. He was a member of the Legislative Council from 1872 to 1892, when he retired to live in England. There he was a justice of the peace, living at Stalham and Tunstead, Norfolk. He married Lucy, daughter of Colonel A. Hamilton Russell. Johnson died on 24 Nov 1919. N.Z.P.D., 29 Jun 1920; Col. Gent.; The Times, 13 Apr 1920. Portrait: Parliament House.
