MACRAE, FARQUHAR, an ordained minister, was selected as headmaster by a commission set up in Auckland in 1861 to consider the founding of a superior school. He came to New Zealand in 1863 as principal of the High School, for which purpose he closed his private school in England. In 1869 he took over the headmastership of the Auckland Grammar School, which was forced to close in 1883 for lack of funds. Macrae was an outstanding educationalist.
