Edward Main Chaffers

CHAFFERS, EDWARD MAIN, was an officer of the Royal Navy, in which he was promoted master in 1830. In the following year he was appointed to H.M.S. Beagle for her second voyage to the Pacific (1831-36) and in 1833 had command of the Unicorn in South America. In 1839 he gave up his naval career to accept command of the Tory bringing the New Zealand Company's expeditionary party. She reached Queen Charlotte Sound in 96 days from Land's End. Chaffers surveyed Port Nicholson, and the Company was able from his data to publish a good map before April 1841. He was appointed harbourmaster early in 1840, but returned to England shortly afterwards.
