RICHMOND, DOROTHY KATE (1861-1935) was born in Auckland, a daughter of J. C. Richmond (q.v.), himself an amateur watercolourist of ability. She was educated in England and on the Continent and, winning a scholarship, spent two years at the Slade School of Art under Legros (1878-80). In 1899 she again studied in France and England and, returning to New Zealand in 1903, began teaching in Wellington. In 1904 she was elected to the council of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, of which she became a life member in 1928. In her work, many examples of which are in galleries in New Zealand, she was a romantic, with a confident mastery of colour and brushwork. She used both oils and watercolours, her chief works being landscapes, flower studies and still life. She died on 13 Apr 1935.
