Charles Robert Chapman

CHAPMAN, CHARLES ROBERT (1847-1928) was born in Edinburgh, the son of Robert Chapman (1812-98), and came to New Zealand with his parents in the Blundell (1848). He was educated at the Otago Boys' High School and Otago University and apprenticed in law to H. Macassey. In 1873 he commenced to practise. He contested the mayoralty of Dunedin in 1888, was elected to the City Council in 1890 and mayor in 1891. During his term he secured from Andrew Carnegie a grant for the erection of the free public library. Chapman died on 15 Aug 1928.
