Charles O'Neill | Charles O'NeillO'NEILL, CHARLES, a son of John O'Neill, of Auckland, was by profession a civil engineer. He laid out the town of Milton (Otago) in the early sixties, and with Thomas Kingston and J.D. Baird he explored the country between Wellington and Wairarapa to discover a suitable route for a railway (1867). He practised at Thames and represented the Thames goldfields in Parliament (1866-68) and Thames (1871-75). As provincial engineer in Wellington O'Neill first proposed tramways in the city (1875), and he brought steam trams into operation there in 1878. As an architect he designed many public buildings.
